Health Technician (Hearing)

Manages independent contacts with patients, family members, significant others, medical staff, colleagues and vendors in order to expedite patient care. Interacts with a high level of independence, making appropriate service delivery decisions and seeking clarification and/or assistance when appropriate. Communicates and interacts with patients in a manner, appropriate to the cognitive, emotional and sensory needs of the patient. Prioritizes duties and responsibilities as dictated by the requirements of the Audiology section. Manages through experience, ability and resourcefulness any unusual problems associated with meeting patient care and Audiology staff needs. Functions as a member of the Audiology/Speech Language Pathology Service staff to provide health care support. Provides support in key functional areas including the hearing-aid walk-in clinic, hearing aid repairs, hearing device certification and tracking, supply management, and scheduling of patients. Receives and screens phone calls, walk-in patients, and incoming devices (mail-in services) from veterans with concerns about their hearing aids or assistive listening devices. Meets with veterans on a one-to-one basis to solve hearing aid problems during the walk-in clinic, including light repair of hearing devices and coordination of follow up appointments. Prepares all necessary paperwork and updates records when receiving or shipping hearing devices and accessories. Makes appropriate entries in the clinic's tracking system in order to insure that the devices are properly tracked during the order or repair process. Utilizes the Remote Order Entry System for hearing aid repairs, device orders, and other supplies as necessary. Preferred

Health Technician (Hearing)/GS-06 - PD# 5432-A Physical Requirements:
The duties of the position require periods of sitting, standing and walking. Working with patients in the clinic requires regular sitting, bending and standing. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a CRT of 1-8 hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and psychosocial problems and needs. Occasionally a piece of equipment would need to be moved. A significant amount of walking may be required to interact with patients and other services. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level:
One year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent for this position. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include providing support in five functional areas. They are:
1) walk-in clinic; 2) hearing aid repairs; 3) hearing aid and ear mold certification and tracking; 4) data and equipment and supply management; and 5) scheduling of patients; OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. Successfully completed six (6) months or nine (9) semester hours of graduate education in a degree program directly related to the work of the position as a substitution for specialized experience. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Transcripts (unofficial) are required at time of application. A transcript or course listing must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Applications submitted without this information will not be considered. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Education at the graduate level in an accredited college or university meets the requirements for positions at the GS-6 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. In order to be creditable under this provision, the graduate education must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. As such, course work in fields closely related to those specified include may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance. Examples (not all inclusive) of closely related graduate level coursework include audiology, hearing science or comparable major of study OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, meets the requirements for this position. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (copy of unofficial transcripts required at time of application). Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used. Preferred
Experience:
Hearing aid repairs troubleshooting and light repair, ordering hearing aids or accessories, coordinating hearing aid repairs. Highly qualified applicants with the preferred experience will be referred first to the hiring manager. If no selections are made out of the highly qualified applicants list, a secondary list of minimally qualified applicants who do not have the preferred experience will be referred to the hiring manager. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
